Tomsk NRMC Today

Tomsk National Research Medical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Tomsk NRMC) was established in 2016 on the initiative of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO Russia) and with the support of the Tomsk Region Administration.

The Center was founded on the basis of the Tomsk Cancer Research Institute, which merged with four other academic medical institutions:

  1. Cardiology Research Institute (including its branch, the Tyumen Cardiology Center)
  2. Mental Health Research Institute
  3. Goldberg Research Institute of Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine
  4. Research Institute of Medical Genetics

Our Mission

The primary goal of Tomsk NRMC is to drive fundamental, exploratory, and applied clinical research. We focus on uncovering the causes and development of major socially significant diseases, creating innovative medical technologies, and developing new pharmaceuticals. By leveraging our unique scientific and educational potential, we aim to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare across the Russian Federation.

History and Leadership

Tomsk NRMC officially opened on July 1, 2016. Its founding Director was Professor Evgeny L. Choynzonov, MD, PhD, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Since December 19, 2019, the Center has been headed by Professor Vadim A. Stepanov, PhD, DSc, Academician of the RAS.

Strategic Development

The merger of these academic research institutes, which previously formed the core of the Tomsk Scientific Center (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences), marked a strategic milestone in the reform of Russian academic science. This consolidation ensured the sustainable, dynamic growth of all member institutes and elevated fundamental and applied biomedical research to a new level.

The cornerstone of the Center's initial growth was its Development Program (2016-2020). This program laid the foundation for integrating scientific, clinical, and educational activities, and defined research priorities in key areas:

  • Population and preventive medicine
  • Genomic medicine
  • Personalized medicine
  • Regenerative and rehabilitation medicine
  • Translational medicine
  • Nuclear medicine and medical imaging

Tomsk NRMC Today: A Decade of Excellence

Ten years after its founding, Tomsk NRMC remains the largest medical academic research center under the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The Center successfully unites interdisciplinary expertise across five research institutes and its Tyumen branch.

Today, our infrastructure features:

  • Over 50 research laboratories
  • 6 specialized clinics with 1,086 beds
  • 150,000 patients receiving care annually

Our clinical expertise spans adult and pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, intensive care, oncology, pediatrics, medical genetics, neurology, internal medicine, psychiatry, and radiology. Tomsk NRMC’s scientific impact is consistently recognized by its leading positions in national publication rankings, innovation activity, and the volume of high-tech medical care provided.

Education and Training

Academic training is a cornerstone of Tomsk NRMC’s reputation. We prepare top-tier scientific and medical professionals through a robust educational network:

  • 10 PhD programs in biological, biomedical, and clinical sciences (150 graduates over the past decade)
  • 13 residency programs (345 graduates over the past decade)
  • Master’s Program: Launched in 2025, specializing in Bioinformatics and Single-Cell Multiomics

Dissertation Councils

Tomsk NRMC hosts five Dissertation Councils accredited by the Higher Attestation Commission. These councils accept defenses for both Candidate of Sciences (PhD equivalent) and Doctor of Sciences degrees in the following specialties:

  • Oncology and Radiation Therapy (Biological & Medical Sciences)
  • Cardiology (Medical Sciences)
  • Radiodiagnostics (Medical Sciences)
  • Pathological Physiology (Medical Sciences)
  • Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology (Biological & Medical Sciences)
  • Genetics (Biological & Medical Sciences)
  • Psychiatry and Narcology (Biological & Medical Sciences)

Academic Integration and Partnerships

A defining feature of Tomsk NRMC is its deep, historical integration with Tomsk’s renowned scientific and educational collaboration, particularly the Siberian State Medical University (SSMU). Many university departments were originally co-founded by the pioneering scientists of our academic medical institutes.

Today, this alliance bridges cutting-edge science and education. Medical students conduct coursework, work on graduation theses, and complete hands-on internships within Tomsk NRMC's research and clinical divisions. Furthermore, many of our leading scientists and physicians serve as professors and lecturers at the university, ensuring the rapid translation of new medical knowledge directly into the classroom.
